THE FATIMA MESSAGE AND THE 21ST CENTURYCHURCH: CONCLUDING POST- PROPHETIC MISSIONARY SCRIPT.

By Rev. Fr. Kenneth Chinkata Evurulobi.

An intrepid Joseph Ratzinger, the die-hard doctrinal chief of the past few decades does not necessarily translate into a rugged, resolute and revolutionary Pope Benedict XVI and cannot. The former is a fashionable secular attempt to describe an ecclesiastical refuse collector in a specialist rhetoric after having successfully severed the link it has with the language of the Church’s faith – all with a view to compelling it to savor the sweetness and there after surrender to the pernicious effects of personality –cult. The truth is that such a person always ends up, after all the noise has subsided, a mere delicacy in the hands of agnostics, relativists and theological predators, or at best, becomes an insipid symbolism of the various permutations of clericalism, conservatism and ecclesiasticism. The latter, on the other hand, is the logical implication of the progressive and transformative repositioning of the 21st Century Church by the Holy Spirit using the yielded vessel of a dedicated and humble theological personality which Joseph Ratzinger has always proved to be ever since he made his first public outing as a theological adviser to his Archbishop during the Second Vatican Council. The historical development of the personality of Pope Benedict XVI, with all its seemingly contradictory and controversial episodes, must be fully appreciated as resourceful and decisive in showing the way forward for the Church and leading her through the difficult, rocky and slippery terrains of the 21st Century. Joseph Ratzinger has never failed to deliver on the authentic progressive expectations of the contemporary Church. Nevertheless, this statement I must admit is very highly disputable to reprobate ecclesiastics on a mission to kill the “Logos” by first of all decorating it and positioning it on the high Temple pinnacle with all its implications for Total, Big, Unchangeable, Irrevocable, Long and Eternal Failure. After all, was Satan not present at the most radically decisive moment of Jesus’ own life in the form of human sympathy, and was a Judas not functionally active during the renewal of the apostolic commitment and the inauguration of the new Priesthood as the sustaining principles of service to the “Logos”. For those faithful children of the heavenly Woman who visited Fatima in 1917 and left a message for them, the betrayal and failures of an institution is quite disheartening and greatly disillusioning especially as this concerns the 3rd part of the message of Fatima. But this does not translate and cannot translate into the failure of the Word Made Flesh. As I deeply reflected on these issues last night with strong antiphons of worry punctuating every episode of my discussions with Mama Mary, the Our Lady of Fatima, She assured me that the failures of a David or a Peter are not the same and must therefore at the same time, be distanced from the betrayals of a Judas Iscariot. The denial of Peter which necessarily painted him in satanic colours is not the same as, or equal the betrayal of a Judas Iscariot which is Satan unreservedly personified. The former is at the lowest rung of the ladder of faith, while the latter is at the epic of unbelief. Unbelief is the official capital city of Lucifer, and darkness is its abode. WE CAN UNDERSTAND WHY CHILDREN ARE AFRAID OF DARKNESS, writes Shakespear, BUT WHY ARE MEN AFRAID OF THE LIGHT?

Mama Mary has also led me by her own hands to explore the rich social-theological deposits of my late but distant elder brother in the priesthood, Benard Lonergan. Bernard Lonergan had defined the term “authenticity” through the instrumentality of two editors – T.J. Farrel and P.A. Soukup, as the precarious and ever-developing state of a human being reached only by long and sustained faithfulness to the transcendental precepts. These precepts are: Be Attentive; Be Intelligent; Be Reasonable and; Be in Love. Lonergan, however, distinguished a two-fold authenticity: a minor authenticity of the person regarding faithfulness to the tradition that nourishes him or her; and a major authenticity that is able to justify or condemn the tradition itself when the failures of individuals become the norm. More so, Mama Mary went ahead to enlighten me on the fact that the height attained by the most obedient and most humble person who is standing outside the embrace of freedom is only the gold-coated side of the coin of a canonized cowardice. Consequently, every authentic subject of obedience, no matter its nature, even one which claims to belong to the divine hierarchy, is always and must necessarily be found to be an author, or co-author, or at least, an astute defender of the solemn dictates of freedom. Such a subject cannot stand outside the ground of freedom but must be an insider because the accredited facilitators of freedom do not and cannot survive outside the environment governed by freedom itself.

Furthermore, clandestine integrity often times consciously or unconsciously describes the fabrics mediocrity is made of. And when it is allowed to covet undue privileges to itself, it constitutes the greatest miscreant to good judgment. At this point, it is only an introspective mindset that holds the key to a jubilant personality defrocked of questionable credentials and safe from the heat of public odium. For someone who forms an integral element to an impious but authoritative affirmation, the burden of the proof of authenticity becomes an issue of manifest commitment to practical inundations which can, often times, be misconstrued as a sublime expression of jaundiced affection.

Again, the tangential appreciation of the lofty significance of our status as free beings and the implication of this for existential decisions must have to be regarded as an irascible energy which transforms us into unrepentant though unconscious victims of mediocrity. Unless this appreciation is full, the story of life and everything it stands for is reduced to a scatting oration or at best becomes a long introduction to an incandescent ontology. Between slavery and freedom, the score for human action must be persuaded to emerge. Unfortunately, often times, this is a prayer pressed had on the ears of providence. Only free men pray this kind of prayer and get an answer. Freedom, I believe, is unhindered access to that which the human person is in the very depth of his Being - an imago Dei.

I have had the privilege to meditatively study the document “Statements on Our Lady of Fatima” published by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The explanation offered therein copiously aver to the theological ascents I have already made in most of my writings. And if the whole of the Church’s teachings form a unity and are therefore not contradictory then this document cannot be understood without reference to other doctrinal documents issued by the Holy Office especially one of the most recent on the "Eternal Word of God - The Logos". A friend sent in one to my mail box. I will be greatly perturbed if a copy has not been sent to the NigerianChurch and her Bishops.

The very decisively rich and powerful “Fatima Theology”, written in a very simple language that could be understood even by little children and which will also appeal to intellectual minds, reflects in no small measure the high level of mysticism which the author brought to bear on the subject under discussion. The author of that theology is no other person than Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. To express surprise at this highly inspired theological treatise on a very controversial topic is to underestimate the hand of God leading the Church and directing the course of history by the power of the Holy Spirit.

However, at the time when the decisively leading author of that document was to give a stamp of final authority to the entire document, the world - Ratzinger’s host, took the microphone from him and gave it to Cardinal Angelo Sodano who refused to hand it on to John Paul II but wittingly, in a manner reminiscent of a Judas bent on concluding a mission by a kiss, sent the whole Church back to the Dark Ages when he confined the Fatima Message to the past. The dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God affords us the opportunity to understand that by a special divine arrangement, Mary’s body did not experience the imprisonment and the decay associated with the grave. But the statement of Cardinal Angelo Sodano has thrown wicked spanners on the nuts that hold the different sources of that dogma together. To reply his person is a defense of the Church’s faith. His statement that “--- the events to which the third part of the “secret” of Fatima refers seem part of the past,” translates to a kind of a burial for the Mother of God and all her efforts in the Church, an event which the Church has never subscribed to. And it stood out very lonely in the entire document like the rarefied statue of Albert Pike in Arkansas and eventually made him look like an undeniable beneficiary of the promises, both occult and secular, of personality cult. The statement both in content and in method is a sore occurrence as well as the most wanton and ignominious breach of theological progress and a conscious sowing of the seeds of great discord along the path of harmonious inspiration. In no greater measure has the insidious plot to trap the church perpetually in the blind alley of Satanism and apostasy been revealed in modern times than in the above statement. The logical implication of the statement is the willful secularization of the powerful and influential office of the Secretariat of State and the demeaning of the persons that occupy it. The echoes are today reverberating in every nook and cranny of the Church’s life across the globe.

The influential and authoritative effort to trap the Church perpetually in a satanic blind alley is what the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Our Lady of Fatima is pointing out to the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. If this motherly responsibility being exercised by Our Lady, the Mother of Jesus Christ and the Mother of the Church has been described as insubordination, abuse and heresy by Masonic beasts thereby leading to interdict and excommunication of the  Virgin Mary, the Mother of God ( Theotokos), the first Christian and the most authentic model of Christian life , then we her children stand with her at this moment when she is the Our Lady of Sorrows shedding tears of blood and savoring the bitterness of sweet betrayal by a Judas Iscariot against her only Son. Historically speaking and encrypted by her unassuming personality, has this not always been the lot with which the world greets her at such moments of salvation history – total neglect and a cruelly pierced and bleeding but immaculate heart? Not to worry! At last She will triumph. Her Immaculate Heart Will Surely Triumph! The apostle John is actually a divine statement of consolation for Our Lady in the midst of a timid and chaotic Apostolic College that could not meet the basic expectations of their Master what more of lending listening ears and practical support to the Cause which She champions in the Church and in the world.

To confine a message which, the Holy Father affirms “brings to an end a period of history marked by tragic human lust for power and evil, yet pervaded by the merciful love of God and the watchful care of the Mother of Jesus and of the Church” to the archives and magisterially set out to confront the goliathic figures and impositions that are consistently and violently knocking on the door of the Church - a Church of sinners and saints, of human and divine elements, of  charisma and of tradition, of permanence and of change, of experience and of rationality, of temporality and of spirituality, of subjective spirit which nevertheless must submit to an objective one -  and which knocks are growing loud daily, is to play a David without an anointing. For those of us who are human, but are convinced beyond doubts that Satan has nothing to offer; and that he  holds no alternatives, no attractions and no bargaining power and deserves nothing except a strong rebuke despite the encumbrances that scream loudly from the backyard of our individual humanity and who  are also confident that God is still Immanuel and therefore we are not orphans even as it is evidently clear that it is not yet the end of the world, the timely intervention of Our Lady more than the pride of the ostrich which the Secretariat of State wears presently is the only weapon against the Ancient Dragon or Serpent and the wicked Accuser. That Mother Mary has crushed its head is not something in the past. It is an eternal feat achieved by God in which the “Fiat” of Mama Mary is not an accidental occurrence. The effective and functional presence of St Michael the Archangel is a perpetual rebuke on any further accretion of the Serpent or its offspring whichever way they undertake to manifest themselves. But for a father who has been scandalously empowered to play safe by hiding behind abstract legalisms to watch helplessly as his children or his sheep are cruelly torn into pieces and devoured by the roaring lion before his very eyes is, to say the least, unfortunate.  Again it is only very disappointing that Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, a privileged migrant (all of us are) from the Holy Office to the Secretariat of State who is in a better position to tell the radical impregnating force which the Fatima Message - a message that has been transferred from the purely subjective compartment, rebuilt with densely theological bricks and identified as a property of the Universal Church -  signifies for the Marian dogmas, has become Spartan with the truth and has instead resorted to speak in the secular language of diplomacy about urgent issues that touch critically on the rights and privileges of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Definitely the situation calls for a prayerful vigilance over the activities of the Secretariat of State within the past few years and goes to illuminate the fact that, while it is not only true that collegiality does not exhaustively define infallibility even as infallibility necessarily implies collegiality, the Primacy of Peter holds a necessary, valid and legitimate appeal against such embarrassing and scandalous malcontents which occur along collegiate lines. The way forward is to revisit the archives with a view to attending realistically to the demands of the 3rd message with every amount of contrition and humility it deserves as well as the total overhaul of the Church’s diplomatic machinery. This however is the prerogative of the Holy Father, Benedict XVI. But as his other legitimate children who have been ominously locked out of our family house, our effort to provide the Holy Father with the required data that will form the basis of action is greatly significant and compels us, in the company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Our Lady of Fatima, to harbor great sympathy for the ministry of Fr. Nicholas Gruner.

The church is the people of God gathered in a mystical communion of love around the Eucharistic table and speaking fluently a divine language with a grave human accent even as she hears and understands clearly every other language spoken to and around her. The church’s diplomatic mission is considered valuable and effective in so for as the church’s language of faith, hope and love is brought to bear and as well govern or at least influence every other language which is spoken to or around her. The diplomatic mission of the Holy See stands or falls in the measure of its faithfulness to this ideal.

Sister Lucia made it very clear that she received the message only but not its interpretation. And so for anybody to elevate her simple interpretations and witness of faith to the level of confirmation not only of correct interpretation but also of faithful implementation of the Fatima message amount to an intimidation and an imposition on her person and on the faith of the little children that weaved the different strands of the Fatima message into a unity. The Fatima Message could correctly be said to be concerned with events that have passed already if it has not made its way to Rome but remained as a mere nostalgic record of an extra–ordinarily exemplary piety and virtue achieved by three children in the remote diocese of Leiria. And there have been many of such in the world. But from all indications, it transcended this level and instead has come to, not only govern these others but also illuminated the Marian dogmas. To suppose that the Fatima events did not play a legitimizing factor, no matter how remote, in the promulgation of the dogma of the Assumption in 1950 is to underrate the church’s insatiable appetite for doctrinal details. The discontentment which greets the document on Fatima message does not arise out of the fear that all the facts were not considered to the minutest details. This would be very unfair to a Holy Office headed by a die-hard doctrinal chief like Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. Rather, it hinges strongly on the sincerity of Angelo Sodano. It is about manipulation. It is about conspiracy. It is about a monumental betrayal of the Mother Church in favour of an agenda that is foreign and at the sametime contradictory to the church’s nature and mission. It is the story of the seed of the woman in confrontation with Lucifer in the very presence of Peter and the rest of the Apostles including Judas Iscariot.

In this regard, the much-touted success of the diplomatic mission of the Holy See could turn out to be a stinging satire on the church’s faith. The journey of the message of Our Lady of Fatima to Rome was not through a route constructed by mere psychologism, emotionalism or clairvoyancy but through a verifiability process manned at strategic stages through hard-framed doctrinal lenses. This eventually made it possible for it to be taken out of the domain of private revelation and placed on the study desk of public revelation, even though it was still subjective. The simplicity of life and shepherding vigilance of the Bishop of Leiria steered the ship of Fatima message off the coast of State House Meetings where a decision about it would have been taken over a cup of coffee. And make no mistake about it, experts from diverse professional backgrounds would have been gathered to proffer different vocabularies and the one which sarcastically captures the entire events would be adopted as its explanation and the substantive parts especially those considered to intolerable deleted. But that was not to be. As adequately deserved by an uncommon vocabulary in the language of faith, John XXIII and Paul VI maintained a ‘listening silence” with a watchful vigilance. And thus, as the Holy Spirit began to draw the veil back “on a series of events which makes history and interpret it in depth, the violence visited upon John Paul II on the 13th May, 1981 – on the memorial of Our Lady of Fatima compelled him to make a visit to the Archives. The Holy Spirit employed him as an instrument to write the introductory part of the “Statements on Our Lady of Fatima” Joseph Ratzinger gave these statements a theological shape which necessarily carried with it a human accent. However, averse to the over flowing harmony which marks every page of the document, and while unrepentantly and over-ambitiously attached, with leechlike tenacity, to an imposing Masonic architectural plan for a new papacy and the secular role it will play in the emerging New World Order, Cardinal Angelo Sodano allowed the secular world to determine finally the destiny of the effort of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Our Lady of Fatima.

If God has a Mother (Theotokos), and if this Mother is the Blessed Virgin Mary the Our Lady of Fatima who equally is the Mother of the Church; and if it is true that the subjective faith and experience of this woman, both as a singular witness in the little family of Bethlehem and later as a model – was radically decisive to the evolution of the church’s objective faith which latter on came to govern it;  and whereas the Fatima message is a kind of subjective experience at close proximity with the objective faith of the church because it has been proved to be an experience shared with the Mother of God, then since it does not define a new doctrine and does not pretend to do so, it becomes very spiteful to ignore and refuse to implement the guidelines it dictates for the church. And to understand that such a message was put on the unsoiled lips of innocent children removes every veil of suspicion about any overt-ambition that might be associated with it and places this suspicion, with an increased volume, on the dogmatic machinery of the Holy See. But that a subject of such importance was corrupted and allowed to drown completely by “tragic human lust for power and evil” is evidently clear when one considers the fact that Cardinal Angelo Sadano, Vatican Secretary of State was able to manipulate a meeting between Benedict XVI and the highly esteemed Austrian theologian and ardent Marian devotee, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna on the subject of the diplomatic mission of the Holy See as headed by Cardinal Angelo Sodano. I am not in anyway comfortable with Cardinal Christoph Schönborn’s unguarded sympathy for homosexuals nor with his approach to the marriage institution which inclines towards liberalization but from a different perspective, one cannot but concur to the fact that The Roman Curia was "urgently in need of reform."  The story is not different in the Nigeria church.

Whatever might be the case, the Fatima Message imposes a request – one which has basis and has gathered theological as well as diplomatic force –upon the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI. And if the events of the 2nd Mystery of the light holds any meaning and significance for the church, then this request is inescapably urgent and critical to the point of an emergency.

At the global scene and with the church occupying a very conspicuous place, one is only shocked at the abysmal disparity that has taken place between the radically decisive definitions and clarifications of the Church’s faith achieved by the Holy Office on the one hand and the deception, equivocation and subversion that have come to mark the activities of the Secretariat of State in relation to local churches, bishops, clergy, the religious and the laity as well as the pious organizations and ecclesiastical institutions.

Going by the event of legalism that is gradually taking root at the backyard of the Church’s life dictated remotely by the several cases of the sexual abuse of minors, and having unmasked the real faces of terrorists and their methods, the cruel imprisonment of the truth which the 3rd message holds raise some perplexing concerns not only for Francisca, Jacinta and Lucy but also for every visionary Christian in the face of contemporary global crisis of faith and the precarious situation to which the Church has been subjected. To regard such concerns which lead to legitimate requests as one “without basis” is, to say the least, unfortunate. Undoubtedly, every member of the Church – together with numerous others outside official Catholicism – is a child of Mary. But for those who belong to the evolving new level of childhood that is faithfully committed to the motherly figure of Mary at Fatima – a childhood that is modeled after the Infant Jesus and therefore cannot afford to be disobedient to the Holy Family placed under the watchful eyes of Mary and Joseph, even as he puts them into great perplexities of mind to the extent of having them search fruitlessly for him for three days, these sentences of interdict and excommunication, whoever is their source, wherever they are coming  from and whatever purpose they are meant to serve, constitute the manifest real textures and contents of our prayers, strongly backed by the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mediatrix of all Graces, to God our Loving Father. And with Karl Rahner, that great theologian whose symbolic works have come to prove decisive and invaluable in theological circles today, I affirm sagaciously that “grace is ubiquitous”.
